Search Engine Optimisation Tools (for the webdesigner)

As a website designer, I find myself with far less time than I would like to research Search Engine Optimisation techniques. Although I spend a few hours a day studying the subject, I wish I had more time.

It is essential that we design websites from the ground up, in order to maximise the Search Engine Rankings for our clients and there are some great tools available to help us with this task:

I would like to introduce you to one very useful Search Engine Optimisation tool -

Search Status.

This compact toolbar can be integrated into Mozilla and Mozilla Firefox and provides you with some very useful information about your competitors pages.

Two of the quickest and easiest features are available at a glance:

Google PageRank

the Google Pagerank can be seen as a basic 'score' for your website and allows a very simple comparison with your competitors site.

Alexa Traffic Rank

The Alexa traffic ranks score your site on ...you guessed it ...traffic, the more traffic coming to your website the higher the 'score' it receives.

The Search Status toolbar also allows you to analyse:

Keyword density

This feature analyses the structure of the page and reports on the number of times your chosen Keyword appears in each of the main areas:

  • Title
  • Headings (H1/H2/H3)
  • Body
  • Links
  • in Bold
  • META Description
  • META Keywords

By analysing these figures in comparison with your webpages, you can start to gain some valuable information regarding which areas of your page(s) may need improvement.

Indexed Pages

Provides a listing of how many pages of your competitors website have been indexed by Google, Yahoo & MSN

Backwards Links

Shows the number of links that each of Google, Yahoo & MSN have 'pointing' to your chosen page

Once again, analysing the websites that link to your competitors can provide you with an opportunity of approaching them and requesting a link to your own website.

These are just the main parts of the Search Status toolbar that I use regularly and can save valuable time in analysing a competitors website ... leaving you more time to devote to your website design.

I will be looking at some more useful SEO tools in future posts but in the meantime try and check out the free trial from WebCEO - an excellent SEO tool that I quickly purchased the full version of .. but more about that some other time.

Alexa.com is a subsidiary of Amazon.com. It is a website which provides information on traffic levels for websites. The Alexa rank is measured according to the amount of users who’ve visited a website with the Alexa toolbar installed. Alexa toolbar is an application developed by Alexa Internet. Its primary use is to measure website statistics. This toolbar collects as well as gives some valuable information. Once you install it, the Alexa toolbar monitors all your surfing and collects information about what domains you visit. They use this data to rank web sites. The traffic rank they assign to websites is based on 3 months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of other users and is a combined measure of page views and users. Webmasters, advertisers and ad networks use your blog’s Alexa rank as a gauge to determine the worth of a link on your website. If you depend on link or site selling as a form of monetization you’ll definitely want to increase your Alexa rank, because it’ll increase your bargaining power when it comes to ad pricing.
